Frequently Asked Questions
I’m looking for a house cleaner, what are my options?
Domestic Referral Agencies
The workers are screened, and background checked. They are legal to work in California and are responsible for filing taxes at the end of each year. They are met in person on a weekly basis with the agency. The agency may keep track of customer service ratings with follow up phone calls and surveys. If you are not happy with the referred domestic worker, you can ask for a replacement.
Domestic workers usually only work part time and are not rushed when they clean your home. With a domestic referral agency you will be assigned the same professional to your house every time unless you request someone new. Your referred professional earns more money with each job. Therefore, they will work harder to earn your business. High tech referral agencies like Aloha Maids usually run their companies with a CRM or Customer Relations Manager, they have office staff, and are easy to communicate with because there is a separation from the worker’s duties and the office. With modern technologies, they are able to send out automatic text alerts and email alerts to remind you of upcoming appointments. Credit cards may be used and stored safely with a referral agency, because they often use an encrypted Customer Information Management system to store credit cards. If you want great value at a low cost, and you believe that companies should follow state regulations, and hire people who are legal to work in California, you should hire through a referral agency. Aloha Maids is a domestic referral agency.
Employee Model/ National Franchises
Employee Based Model hires employees to clean houses. They streamline their cleaning processes and provide mandatory training. They wear uniforms. Legal house cleaning companies are typically more expensive than Domestic Referral Agencies. The house cleaners make significantly less than with a referral agency. As a customer you are not likely to have the same employed house cleaners every time.
If you want to hire a cleaning service with legitimate employees, probably the only way possible is to hire through a national franchise company. Most small businesses in California are either black market companies or referral agencies.
Black Market/ Most House Cleaning “Companies”
There are a lot of house cleaning “companies” that are operating on the black market. Many of these businesses do not declare taxes, and do not even hire their “employees” with a W2 form. These companies are operating illegally in order to avoid tax responsibilities, and to avoid paying workers compensation insurance. The majority of Aloha Maids competitors operate this way and make many false claims in their advertising.
Web Based Platforms
Another business model to be aware of are Web-Based Platforms. Platforms are business models that allow you to use modern technology such as an App to book appointments using your phone or tablet. Most of the platforms are out of compliance with the California Civil Code. In most cases, they do NOT do a proper background check. Platforms also give you limited to no office support and often don’t even have a phone number to call.
Does Aloha Maids Referral Agency hire Independent Contractors?
The answer is NO. Aloha Maids Referral Agency does not hire “Independent Contractors.” Aloha Maids mostly refers “Independent Domestic Workers.” The difference is that domestic referral agencies are required to follow the California civil code. The Independent Domestic Workers DO NOT have their own employees.
Do the referred domestic workers bring their own products and equipment?
Absolutely! We only select house cleaners that have all their own equipment and have been working in the business for several years. It is very important to us that you have house cleaners that are qualified to clean your house.
May I supply the referred domestic worker with equipment that I prefer them to use?
Absolutely! One of the things that most of our customers enjoy about using a domestic referral agency is the flexibility. Do you have precious materials in your home, like stainless steel or marble? Are there chemicals that you may be allergic to? Just tell the referred domestic worker when they arrive and they will be eager to accommodate. Often your referred domestic worker will ask for permission to use your vacuum. This is not because they don’t have a vacuum; this is usually because your vacuum is more sanitary. Although the workers may do their best to keep their vacuums clean, using your own home vacuum is the best for you and for the referred domestic worker. If you would prefer that they use their own vacuum, just let them know or contact us, and we will let the worker know that this is important to you.
May I tell the referred domestic worker what they are supposed to do?
You may tell the domestic worker what to do, just don’t show them how to do it. If you get too involved, you may inherit employment responsibilities. The best way to avoid this is to leave a written list for the referred domestic worker before they begin the work. After the work is completed, we suggest doing an inspection with the worker before they leave.
Do I need to be at the house while the referred domestic worker is working?
You do not. Security is a major factor in hiring the perfect house cleaner for your home and your family. Aloha Maids does a national and local criminal background check before we add any worker to our registry. To provide additional security, we also recommend that you purchase a lock box for your home so that no one else can enter.
