I love Spring and I love Easter. Easter is the time to celebrate our good fortune and honor of Jesus, who sacrificed his life for all the Christians around the world. Before Christianity, Easter was a time to celebrate fertility. The coming of a new season. Other traditions have many other holidays, celebrations and festivities. Similar to Christmas, in America, it’s all about eating well, being merry, and sharing the joy of life with family, friends and loved ones.
In Southern California, Spring used to seem just like another season to me, and Easter, just another version of Christmas. The only difference was, instead of getting toys, I got chocolates and hunted for Easter eggs.
The older I become, the more I notice seasons. Yes, even in Southern California, we have seasons. During the Summer, it has become hotter, and more humid. Which is strange, to me. I remember waves of dry Santa Ana winds blowing my hair and scratching and cracking lips and skin. Now I dread summer for the sweaty nights, hot weather and mosquitos. Every year also seems to be more difficult to breath.
How do you know when it’s winter in Southern California? Winters are dryer now, with less rain. The temperature is lower than fall and spring. It gets darker earlier in the afternoons, and remains dark until later in the mornings. In southern California, it helps to wear a sweater or long sleeve shirt. Most the time it is not needed, but it makes things a little more comfortable.
Fall and Spring are the best times of the year in Southern California. The average temperatures are around 70 degrees. You can wear whatever you want or nothing at all. It’s not humid or cold. Basically the sun is warm and pleasant, people are nice, and you have nothing in the world to worry about.
With that being said, since Easter is at the beginning of Spring, it makes it a wonderful holiday with friends in family. I have fond memories of painting Easter eggs and waking up early to find holiday baskets for my sister and I covered in yellow and blue shiny wrapping and big bows.
We always got candies and presents from the Easter Bunny. The baskets were filled with plastic green or yellow “straws.” The candies were usually chocolate bunnies, marshmallow Peeps, and other goodies. I loved hunting for eggs. I’m not very fond of hard boiled eggs, but I liked to search for them. I also like Egg Salad sandwiches, which we had a lot after Easter. Some of the eggs were plastic and had coins and candy.
Now that I am older, I get to hide the eggs. I love finding places around the house to hide them from my nieces and nephews. I also enjoy the times we have with the family, the warm weather, and the feeling of optimism that comes with this time of year and celebration. The champagne seems to flow, and as with all our family parties and celebrations, the food is delightful and delicious.
