DIY Holiday House Cleaning Checklist
First start by getting a total assessment of the house. Take a glance at what needs to be done the most, and needs the most attention to. Check every room and make a list. Everyoneâs house is different so you will for sure have different problem areas.
Make a list of these problem areas. A list will make it easy to delegate responsibility. Since children will probably want to help with the holiday cleaning, this list will also allow you to delegate these various chores without having to guide everyone as they go.

Holiday House Cleaning Checklist
Finally, a Christmas cleaning checklist can help you spread out your chore list over several days instead of trying frantically finish everything in one day.
Ok now, letâs get in the holiday spirit. Pump up the holiday music, do some stretches and start cleaning!
Put everything in its place.
After you complete your list, time to organize. Use baskets to sort out all the items in every room out of place. Put like items in each basket. Use the baskets to put items in the proper rooms they belong.
Organizing your rooms will make cleaning a simpler task. Also as the toys mount, they will also be a challenge to make space for and arrange. Best to get super organized early on.
Also having an organized home helps you keep focused on the task at hand, cleaning.

Cleaning the Living Areas
Tackle the Carpet
Do you have stains in your carpet? The best easy solution is to rent a carpet extractor from home depot. They are easy to use and will help you get those carpets looking new again.
You also might want to vacuum after you have steamed the carpets to make sure that you have exterminated all the dust mites that can cause allergies. If you neglect this step, any time a person walks through the room these particles will get stirred up again and make the room dirty again. This definitely has to be done if you have pets.
Sweep the Floors and Corners
If you have hard floors, use a broom or vacuum to remove any dirt or sand thatâs lying around.
During the holidays, it pays to focus on getting into all of the corners that usually get skipped during your normal cleaning routine. Use the attachments on your vacuum to get into every nook in the room.
Also, donât forget to vacuum and wipe down the baseboards. Itâs amazing what a little time and attention into the baseboards will do.

Fluff the pillows and toss out any that are starting to look saggy. If you have Christmas themed pillows itâs time to get them out.
If you have a holiday blanket, you should place it out in the living area. Time to get in the holiday mood.
Clean the Kitchen
Use a sponge and dish soap to clean all the areas of the kitchen that have sticky residue. Use the proper cleaning solution for stainless steal.
For granite counters, now is the time the clean and seal them.
For most counter tops, a general all-purpose cleaning or dishsoap and a sponge should be all you need to remove all the built up dirt and grime.Â
Clean the Stove Top and Oven
Since these areas get very dirty around Christmas, it is best to start here first.
The oven may seem like a big chore, but most ovens these days are self cleaning. If you have any issues removing film and gunk with the self clean, you can use an oven cleaning chemical. Easy off is one of the most well known cleaning chemicals.
Empty and Clean the Fridge
Your fridge probably hasn’t been cleaned in a while and to clean it early on will make it easier for after the holidays.
Throw away anything that is rotten or spoiled or past expiration. Besides doing this for your health, you will also free up space for the Ham or Turkey. Yum!
Best way to clean is shelf by shelf, and clean each level along the way with some paper towels and vinegar.
Cleaning the Bathroom
Shine Up the Mirrors
Most mirrors have splotches from tooth paste, or splashes from the sink. Clean and shine the mirrors, and it will leave an overall glow in the bathroom.
Wipe Down the Sink and Counters
Use an all-purpose bathroom cleaner or believe it or not, you can also use dish soap to remove any dirt and water stains on the sink and counters.
Vinegar is the best thing to use to shine faucets. Use vinegar to remove hard water from metal and glass shower doors.
Clean the Toilet
It’s obvious visitors want to use a clean toilet, so clean it inside and out.Â
Tackling the Tub and Shower
For those guests who will be staying over, you will need to clean their bath and showers first. Use dish soap and a sponge to scrub everything, rinse it off with a cup and hot water.
Cleaning the Bedrooms
Make sure to impress the guests by having a clean and orderly guest room.
Make sure to add holiday pillows and a christmas bedspread. Make sure to vacuum and remove all cobwebs from above and in the corners.
We want that room to be welcoming and cozy.
Windows should be cleaned in the Winter too!
I know it seems pointless to clean the windows since it rains so often here in So-Cal (I’m being facetious of course). Clean them always. Especially when you plan to have guests. The house just has a special shine when you do.
A Clean Home for the Holidays
Now pump up the holiday music. You have a busy Christmas ahead of you. Let’s make this the best one ever. You have cleaned, you have prepared. Now let’s enjoy! Take a walk on the beach between cleanings. Stretch out your body and eat well. That’s all it takes to stay stress free this holiday.
