Move Out Cleanings Can Be tricky for sure…
Every property owner or manager has a different expectation. We have even dealt with managers that have a completely different expectation as the owner of the property. In the case you have to deal with both the manager AND the owner, getting back a refund on your deposit will be even more challenging. Regardless of the legal implications involved in handing back the keys of your beloved home you will soon be leaving, it is always nice to leave on good terms. In other words, more than anything, it is certainly polite to at least make an effort. So here are the top 8 things we recommend that you focus on for sure.

Protect your money before you move in…
First things first. Before you ever move in anywhere, take a picture of everything. Pictures inside the oven, stove, stove fan, floors, cupboards inside and out, walls, cabinets, bathrooms, showers, sinks and common areas. Save these photos, so when you return the keys you can link them side by side in order to prove that there was little to no change to the property before and after you have left.

The Kitchen- for Move Out Cleaning
First remove everything from all the drawers and shelves. Clean and scrub anything with mold or grease using a degreaser or dish soap. Always remember to clean the floors last. Start with the top and work your way down.
The stove and the oven- for Move Out Cleaning
Even if you only used the oven 1 time since you moved in, it sure is important to clean it. It may be a self cleaning oven, which is perfect. Just turn on the self clean, then wipe it down when itâs done doing itâs thing. If there is still some grime or oil in there you may need to use an oven cleaner.

If you are going to use an oven cleaner, we suggest you wear a face mask and gloves. Remove all the shelves, put them in the sink and then spray. Spray inside the oven as well. Make sure that all is covered with a white bubbly film. Let stand for 30 minutes and then wash with a brush and sponge. Scrub to remove as much âgrimeâ as possible.

The Living Areas- for Move Out Cleaning
Tidy and vacuum living areas to perfection. Hire someone to shampoo the carpets or rent a portable carpet cleaner from Home Depot if you would like to save money. Empty all storage areas, cupboards, and drawers and whipe down these areas. Always remember to clean the floors last. Start with the top and work your way down.
Â
The Bathroom- for Move Out Cleaning
Wipe and scrub everything with a scotchbrite sponge and water and dishsoap. If something doesnât come out, you may need to use harsher chemicals. Use CLR to remove hard water film or you can use vinegar. For white areas, you may need to use bleach or even pummice. It depends mostly on how dirty these areas are. Clean shelves and storage with a wet towel. Always remember to clean the floors last. Start with the top and work your way down.
Â
The Walls- for Move Out Cleaning
The walls are tricky. I would consult with your landlord before cleaning walls. There is a good chance they will be repainting the walls anyway.
Â
The Curtains- for Move Out Cleaning
Dust the curtain rods and all blinds. If the blinds are plastic be careful not to break them or you will have to pay for replacements. Clean both sides of the Venetian or vertical blind slates and fix or replace the blinds if they are already broken.Â
The Garden and the Exterior- for Move Out Cleaning
The garden may need tidying and cleaning up. Rake up the leaves and soil. If you have a dog or pet, make sure to clean up any pet waste. If you have a BBQ, you may need to clean the grill as well.
All homes have different areas that may need more attention or cleaning. If you have other ideas that come to mind, feel free to add. These are just the basics.
