Molds and mildew are harmful, deal with them now! And completely stop them from coming back, too. ReadĀ these tips for removal and prevention.
As long as there’s moisture in any part of your home, mold and mildew can find their way to exist and unfortunately persist. While weāre initially concerned with how nasty they look, we need to be more concerned about what they can bring to our health. First: mildews are the early stage of molds, and both are fungi which means you donāt want them around because it can lead to serious health problems like headaches, lung issues, sinus and irritation. Theyāre significantly dangerous to babies, pregnant moms and those who have respiratory problems. So learn, not only how to deal but, also how to stop them from coming again.
Outside fabric. Mildewy and moldy fabric can be washed in chlorine bleach and hot water. For some material that chlorine bleach is not recommended, use oxygen bleach and hot water. Soak for 30 minutes then sundry. As much as possible, avoid putting fabric and upholstery as mold spores are just floating in the air.
Indoor fabric.Vacuum first. Mix 1 cup of ammonia and 1 cup of cold water and blot the mixture to the affected area using clean cloth. Repeat on blotting until stains are visibly gone. Make sure to take the used vacuum outside the house and thoroughly clean it. Also, never mix ammonia and chlorine bleach together as they produce toxic fumes.
Carpet. Vacuum and thoroughly clean the vacuum outside the house later. In 2 cups of cold water, pour in 1 tablespoon of liquid laundry soap. Gently blot to the moldy and mildewy area using clean cloth. Dry with a hand blower.
Wood furniture. Vacuum with a soft brush. Wipe off stains by using light touch. Rinse, pat dry, wait until completely dry and polish.
Shower curtain. In a gallon of hot water: pour ½ cup liquid disinfectant, Wash the curtain with the mixture and rinse with a solution of 1 cup of lemon juice and 1 cup of salt in the hot water. Final rinse off with water. Make sure the bathroom is well-ventilated through an exhaust fan.
Throughout the house. Reduce moisture in the house with the help of humidifiers, fans and open windows. Be more cautious during the hot season. Fix plumbing leaks immediately. Make sure no rainwater can seep into your home. Clean fabric outside and inside the house clean and dry.
