Doing your first load of laundry? Follow these basic steps to have washable, fresh, and clean clothes to wear tomorrow.
Laundry is one of the simplest household chores you’ll ever experience. You can even leave it after you have loaded everything into the machine. What makes it difficult is ensuring that your garments are thoroughly washed without being damaged. Here are some basic steps to follow for a successful and efficient wash.
- Sort your clothing.
Sort your items by type and kind before loading them into the washing machine. Check the labels on everything to see if there are any specific directions as to how to wash it (e.g. wash separately, hand wash, dry cleaning). Do not try to save time and energy by tossing everything into the washing machine, as this will cause damage to your clothes. Aside from that, keep colored and white clothes separate to avoid dents, especially on the white ones.
- Arrange your clothes according to their type.
After you’ve separated the white from the colored ones, it’s time to sort them by type. For example, separate your heavier shirts and pants from your light dresses and blouses. You can wash them in batches as long as you use the appropriate water temperature for the type of fabric you’re washing.
- Choose the right detergent and water temperature.
Choosing the appropriate detergent for your laundry is critical to thoroughly removing dirt from your garments. Any sort of cloth or garment should be cleaned with an all-purpose cleaner. If there are any stains, apply stain remover before washing. Always read the directions before placing it inside.
Generally, cold water is used to wash clothing unless your garments and bed linens are badly discolored and dirty, in which case hot water should be used instead. However, regardless of the temperature or the type of clothing being cleaned, cold water must be used for rinsing.
- Check once again, and then load the washer.
Before you put your items in the laundry, double-check everything. Make sure that there are no stains and that all pockets are empty. Place clothes inside the machine one at a time and avoid overloading it. The washer must have ample room to move around. To avoid damage, remember to turn your garments inside out. You can also use a fabric softener if you wish to give your clothes an extra good smell.
- Unload the washer and place the clothes in the dryer.
Carefully remove the garments from the wash and place them in the dryer. Separate the heavy from the light clothes and set the appropriate drying cycle based on the kind of fabric.
- Fold and store
When your clothes are dry, gently fold them and store them in your closet or drawer.
